Annual Statement as to the number of births, stillbirths, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered in Jersey during 2017

The Minister for Home Affairs presents the following statistics for the year 2017 –

  1. Births

Actual births:

The number of actual births in Jersey in 2017 was 949.

This represents the number of babies born in Jersey between 1st January 2017 and 31st December 2017.

There were therefore 59 less births in Jersey in 2017 than in 2016. This is the lowest number of births since 2002.

Registered births:

The number of registered births in Jersey in 2017 (including re-registrations of birth) was 974. Of these, 49 births were registered as re-registrations of birth. There were therefore 925 original registrations of births in 2017.

This represents the number of births which were registered between 1st January 2017 and 31st December 2017.

There were 72 less registrations than in 2016.

There were 947 births (i.e. 97.2% of all Island births) registered in St. Helier .

There were 27 births registered in parishes other than St. Helier. Therefore, 2.8% of births occurred in parishes outside St. Helier .

There were 816 deaths registered in Jersey in 2017.

This is an increase of 51 from 2016 and the highest number since 2002.

  1. Stillbirths

There were 2 stillbirths in the Island in 2017 – the same number as in 2016.

  1. Marriage

There were 447 marriages in Jersey in 2017 – 27 less than in 2016. The most popular months for marriage in Jersey were July and August.

The most popular venue for marriage ceremonies in Jersey in 2017 was the Register Office, where 157 ceremonies took place.

The number of couples who travelled to Jersey for the purposes of marriage by licence of  the  Superintendent  Registrar  was  88,  i.e.  25%  of  all  civil  and  non-Anglican marriages.

There were 275 civil marriage ceremonies in Jersey in 2017, i.e. 70% of all marriages in Jersey.

There were 134 church marriage ceremonies, i.e. 30% of all marriages in Jersey.

Of these ceremonies, 96 marriages were conducted in the Church of England (21.5% of the total Island marriages), 31 marriages were conducted in Catholic churches (6.9% of the total marriages) and the remaining 7 marriages occurred in other denomination churches such as Methodist, Freedom and Kingdom Hall churches.

The number of Jersey resident couples who applied to marry in jurisdictions outside the Island was 33.

  1. Civil Partnerships

In 2017, there were 15 civil partnership ceremonies in Jersey, one more than in the previous year.

The most popular venue for civil partnership ceremonies was the Register Office – where 7 ceremonies took place. The remaining 8 civil partnership ceremonies took place in other authorised civil venues around the Island.

Three couples travelled to the Island for their ceremony.
