RE-ASSIGNMENT OF LEASES (P.104/2005) – COMMENTS

COMMENTS
The Economic Development Committee has recently issued a consultation document on the future development of the fulfilment industry.
The policy recognises the benefit to the Island of those businesses that manage and control their whole supply chain from Jersey. There are also companies that manage and control their business from Jersey, but sub-contract the "pick & pack" part of their supply chain to a third party.
Jersey Post was successful in securing a contract to provide "pick & pack" services to a mail order company that has recently moved its operations to the Island (closing its U.K. operations) and is now managed and controlled from Jersey, supporting a number of local, higher value jobs.
The premises under this lease proposal are to house the "pick & pack" operations provided by Jersey Post as outlined above. As such it is a business model that falls within the recent policy proposals as one to be supported and does not represent a risk to the Island's reputation.
Both companies concerned have already received all approvals and licences required, and the Economic Development Committee therefore supports this proposition in order to allow Jersey Post to perform its obligations to the Jersey-based mail order company.
The Committee is aware that Jersey Post, with other States Departments, has fully investigated the feasibility of using other States-owned property but unfortunately to no practical avail.
