The Council opposes this Amendment

The Council of Ministers is fully committed to ensuring the curriculum meets the needs of all individuals, helping them to realise their potential and providing access to local  employment.  This  can  only  be  achieved  through  a  broad  and  balanced curriculum, which aims to provide students with a range of key skills, as well as covering a wide range of subjects. Education, Sport and Culture is already working to further develop the curriculum, ensuring that priority is given not only to higher education, but also to vocational training and education that responds to changes in the Island's economy.

The Strategic Plan clearly sets out the ways in which this objective will be achieved, and these are outlined under Priority 12 in the section headed: What we will do'. These include the commitment to: maintain academic success, and ensure equally good vocational support for young people', to increase support for non-academic pupils', and to invest in skills development and vocational training to support new and existing industries'.

In the report accompanying his amendment, Deputy Pitman has referred to the Youth Imagine Jersey seminar and the need for a variety of career possibilities for young people. The Council of Ministers fully accepts this view, and this is reflected in Priority 2 of the Strategic Plan which identifies the need for a strong, sustainable and diverse  economy  which  provides  jobs  and  maximises  opportunities  for  Jersey residents.

In conclusion, the Council of Ministers believes the concerns raised by Deputy Pitman are already dealt with under Priorities 2 and 12 of the Strategic Plan and, as such, recommends the amendment be rejected.
