Deputy Hendricus Adolphus Vandervliet of St. Lawrence asked the Connétable of St. Lawrence , President of the Education Committee, the following questions –
"1. Will the President inform the House of the number of
students in the States' Schools who are studying Computer Science at advanced level?
2. In view of the fact that computing professionals are in constant demand before the Housing Committee as J' category essential immigrant employees and that Computer Science was not mentioned in the Report which accompanied P.24 of 1988 on the provision of grants for students undertaking further or higher education outside of the Island, can the President assure the House that encouragement and support is available for those studying Computer Science as with other disciplines?"
The President of the Education Committee replied as follows –
"1. There are at present 11 students in the lower sixth
forms studying Computer Studies at advanced level. Three of these are at Hautlieu School and eight are studying at Victoria College of whom three are girls from the Jersey College for Girls.
There are no students in the upper sixth forms studying Computer Science at advanced level as the arrangement in that year was that sixth form students could undertake a BTEC course at Highlands College. Thirteen students from the three schools are completing that course this year.
2. Computer Science is available as a degree subject in its own right, as part of various degree courses and at higher national diploma level. Any suitably qualified Jersey student who applies for such courses at universities, polytechnics and other institutes of higher education in the United Kingdom is grant aided subject to the normal conditions. There are at present five students undertaking degrees in Computer Science and three undertaking degree courses in Computer Studies jointly with one other subject. A very large number of students have a computing element in their courses over a wide range of academic disciplines.
In addition Highlands College offers a wide variety of courses in computing, including the BTEC National Certificate referred to earlier. On behalf of the Education Committee the Advisory Training Council has had extensive discussions with the industry about training needs and has sponsored training opportunities which have, in the past three years, provided seven analysts/programmers for the local industry and four are currently undergoing training."
