Extension and continuance of State of Emergency.

The Deputy Bailiff informed the House that the Lieutenant-Governor had issued the following -

CONTINUANCE OF STATE OF EMERGENCY

W HEREAS on the fifteenth day of August I declared a State of Emergency

e xisted;

A ND WHEREAS I am satisfied that the e vents which caused me to issue that

d eclaration continue to exist;

N OW therefore, in pursuance of the

E mergency Powers (Jersey) Law, 1964, I h ereby declare the said State of

E mergency to be extended and

c ontinued.

D ated this twelfth day of September, O ne thousand nine hundred and eighty- n ine.

W . P IL L AR

Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey''.

Water situation in Jersey. Statement.

The President of the Public Works Committee made a statement in the following terms -

The dry weather of May, June and

J uly has continued throughout August a nd the first half of September. In

t he past 30 days since the first State

o f Emergency was declared, until

9 a.m. yesterday the rainfall amounted t o an average of 4.2 millimetres. The

f orecast for the next two weeks is for

t he present weather pattern to

c ontinue, and the only precipitation

t o be in the form of thundery showers. L ooking further ahead, the likelihood i s that the weather pattern will

b ecome more changeable. There are,

h owever, no signs that any change will l ead to substantial rainfall. It has

t herefore been necessary to extend the S tate of Emergency for a further

p eriod.

T he Jersey New Waterworks

C ompany's reservoirs have 126 million g allons of water in store, and the

a verage loss of water in store during

t he last two weeks was 4.185 million

g allons. The average daily consumption b y consumers supplied by the

W aterworks Company was a little below 3 .2 million gallons per day. The s ituation is, for the present, under c ontrol.

I f the dry weather continues, then the n eed to introduce greater restrictions m ay arise, and I could then have to

r equest you, Sir, to seek His

E xcellency to extend the State of

E mergency once again.

I would like to bring to the attention

o f the House the truly remarkable co-

o peration of both residents and

v isitors in conforming to the spirit

o f the water restrictions which have

b een imposed. The situation is under c ontrol because of this co-operation,

a nd because of the voluntary economy s o many people have imposed upon

t hemselves.

I n conclusion, I must stress the need

t o maintain at least the present level

o f economy in water consumption. The v olume of water in store will, in a

m atter of days, have fallen below the

1 976 level.''
