Congratulations to newly-elected Presidents

The Bailiff congratulated the newly-elected Presidents of Committees on their appointments.

Personal Statement by Deputy J.L. Dorey of St. Helier

Deputy Jeremy Laurence Dorey made a statement in the following terms -

I am grateful to you, Sir, for giving me t his opportunity to make a brief personal s tatement.

I must begin by making it clear that my

i ntention is not to offend any Member of

t his House, but merely to make my own

p osition quite clear, regarding certain

c omments which have been made since last T hursday's elections for Committee

P residents - comments which I believe may h ave been made in haste, to be regretted

a t leisure.

A s a confirmed athiest, I cannot join in

t he States' opening prayer, because it

a ppeals to a deity in whom I do not

b elieve; even so, I recognise and heartily

a pprove the spirit of the words in that

p rayer, which ask God to grant to this

A ssembly the gifts of wisdom and care, and t o unite the hearts of all its Members.

W isdom and unity are surely vital to our

p urpose.

A s a new Member of this House, I am only t oo keenly aware of a level of public

e xpectation which I am uncertain of being a ble to satisfy. Indeed, my abiding feeling s ince election day, has been one of

g rateful surprise that I should have been

c hosen, together with a heavy weight of

r esponsibility to the electors.

B ut if I am to achieve anything during my

t ime here, it can only be with the active

c o-operation of other Members, both new and

o ld. I am glad to say that co-operation has

b een freely given, up to now, and I would

b e very sad to see it withheld in the

f uture, purely on the basis of some real or

i magined political grouping.

T here is no Member here, new or old, nor

a ny group of Members, with a monopoly on t he truth. We will not always (perhaps not

e ven often) agree as to the best course of

a ction, but there is, for me, a world of

d ifference between forceful argument based

o n sincerely-held beliefs, and aggression

d ictated by dogma.

I believe I must speak for many, when I m aintain that this House, and the people it r epresents, can only be damaged by a war a mong us; but I guarantee, if there is to

b e any sort of war, that I will not wear

t he uniform of either side.

I hope that we will have no more talk of

t hreats, undue pressure, or unwillingness

t o respond to rational argument. The

r esults of last Thursday's elections may

n ot have always suited all Members, but we i n this Assembly should be the last people

t o complain about the vagaries of the

d emocratic process. I voted on the strength

o f the presentations given by the

c andidates, and I see no reason to believe

t hat other Members did otherwise, although t hey may have been assisted in their

c hoice, quite properly, by what they

a lready knew of the candidates.

I will close by saying that I ask for just

t wo things, in my time here: the first is

t he power to cope with a mountain of

p aperwork, without losing touch with the

c oncerns of the ordinary people who trusted m e with their vote; and the second is that

I , and all of us, should continue to

b enefit both from the enthusiasm and energy

o f new Members, and from the experience and w illing assistance of those who are less

n ew.''
