Committee of Inquiry into circumstances leading to the release from contract of former Chief Executive Officer of Sport, Leisure and Recreation Department - statement
The Connétable of St. John, on behalf of the President of the Committee of Inquiry into circumstances leading to the release from contract of the former Chief Executive Officer of Sport, Leisure and Recreation Department, made a statement in the following terms -
As there is a possibility that the House
w ill not sit again until 15th March 1994 I w ould like to take this opportunity to
i nform the House of the progress achieved b y the Committee of Inquiry and of its
p lans to conclude the Inquiry.
T he House will recall the terms of
r eference of the Committee of Inquiry,
a ppointed under Article 30 of the States of
J ersey Law 1966, which were to inquire into t he circumstances which led to Miss Mary F rances Alexander, Chief Executive Officer
o f the Sport, Leisure and Recreation
D epartment, being released from her
c ontract of employment, and the reasons for a greeing to the settlement reached and to
r eport thereon to the States. This Inquiry
i s therefore an inquiry into fact, and it
is the Committee's rôle to determine the
f acts surrounding the above issues.
T he House will know that the Committee as p reviously constituted obtained a
c onsiderable volume of material relevant to t he inquiry. This included detailed written
s ubmissions from certain States' Members, C ommittees, departmental officers and
o rganisations, and from a number of
i ndividuals, including Miss Alexander. The C ommittee is now well advanced in its
r eview of those submissions and other
r elevant information, and in identifying
t he issues and any conflicts of evidence
t hat the Committee must resolve in order to e stablish the facts of the matter.
I t is the Committee's view that it should
t ake whatever steps are necessary to
e stablish and verify those facts, and that
i t should devote such time as is necessary
t o complete this task in a thorough and
e fficient manner. Part of this process will
i nclude public hearings of certain parties
w ho have already made written submissions t o the Committee, so as to enable the
C ommittee to determine and establish the
t ruth about the circumstances that it is
i nvestigating. Whilst it is not possible to
d etermine dates at this stage, I can assure
t he House that the hearings will be held as s oon as possible in order that the
C ommittee may conclude its inquiries and
r eport thereon to this House.''
