Quarantine of animals - questions and answers (Tape No. 345)

Deputy Philip John Rondel of St. John asked Deputy Evelyn Mabel Pullin of St. Saviour, Vice- President of the Agriculture and Fisheries, the following questions -

1.  W ould the President inform the

S ta t e s what permanent quarantine

fa c i li ti es exist for animals

b ro u g h t into the Island and how

m a n y animals may be accommodated in th o s e premises at any one time?

2 .  Does the Agriculture and Fisheries

C o m mittee have access to temporary

q u a rantine accommodation in the event

o f t he permanent accommodation being

f u ll y occupied and how readily

a v a ilable and secure is that

a c c ommodation?''

The Vice-President of the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee replied as follows -

1.  N o such facility has existed in

th e Is l and since 1st February

1 9 9 2 .

2 .  The Agriculture and Fisheries Committee h a s two pens within its own property to

b e u sed in the event of an animal being

l a nd ed illegally into the Island. These

a r e only holding pens to be used for up

t o a maximum period of two weeks whilst l e ga l proceedings, tests, etc., are

c a rr ied out. If the owner wishes to

k e e p the animal this Department has

s p e cial arrangements with MAFF for any i ll e gally landed animal to be

q u a rantined in the United Kingdom.

A  n y private individuals requiring

q u a rantine facilities for their pets

a r e advised to contact MAFF for a list

o f a vailable quarantine centres in the U  n ited Kingdom.

T h e very small demand for quarantine f a ci lities cannot justify the capital

o u t lay to build a unit, which would

h a v e to meet EC standards.

T h e Island did have quarantine kennels a t t he Animals' Shelter but the kennels w  er e far from adequate and desperately n e e ded replacing at a major cost.

G  u ernsey no longer has quarantine f a ci lities for the same reasons.''
