All members were present Prayers

Personal statement by Senator C.G.P. Lakeman

Senator Christopher Gerard Pellow Lakeman made a statement in the following terms -

"It is rare for a member to seek your leave to make a personal statement; even more rare when such statement represents his first contribution to this Assembly.

The floor of this Assembly is the place for announcements and decisions about membership of the Committees of the States and therefore I now refer to the speculation that I might today seek membership of the Policy and Resources Committee.

The President of the Policy and Resources Committee did suggest he might invite me to be a supernumerary member of his Committee some weeks ago. I was honoured because I have a deep and passionate interest in maintaining the Island's privileges. I hoped that I could contribute to the important work of his Committee, not only in defending our independence but also in the areas of human rights, international treaties and government reform.

At the meeting of the Committee Presidents last week, Senator Horsfall's suggestion, I am informed, met with some concern because I am a new member with no experience of the work of the States. I have immense respect for the President, for his Committee and for his Department. My intention is to support rather than frustrate the Committee's work, which must become, in my respectful view, the powerhouse of a government for the new millennium. For this reason, I will not accede to the requests for my name to go forward today as a member of the Policy and Resources Committee."
