Modern Languages in Schools P.74/2024

THE STATES, resuming consideration of a proposition of Deputy Montfort Tadier of St. Brelade entitled Modern Languages in Schools' (P.74/2024), as amended, resumed consideration of parts 3 and 4 of an amendment of the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning (P.71/2024 Amd.), and, adopting those parts of the amendment, agreed that –

in paragraph (d), after the word "that" there should be inserted the words "a review and consultation is undertaken by the Jersey Curriculum Council for", and for the words "from September 2026" there should be substituted the words "and to report back to the Minister before the end of December 2025"; and

after paragraph (d) there should be inserted the following new paragraph (e) –

"that  the  reviews  and  consultations  undertaken  by  the  Jersey  Curriculum  Council  include assessment and costings of any staff and non-staff resource requirements and any effects on option choices in schools.".

THE  STATES,  adopting  paragraphs  (a)  and  (b)  of  the  proposition  of   Deputy  Montfort   Tadier  of St. Brelade , as amended, requested the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning to undertake any necessary actions to ensure –

  1. that all students, both primary and secondary, should receive support from their school to access and develop their home language, in accordance with the rights afforded by Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; and
  2. that all mainstream provided secondary schools should continue to offer a choice of at least two modern languages, other than English, one of which must be French.
