Question
What action, if any, does the Minister propose to take to tackle the supply of social rental homes (not affordable homes) in the short and medium term, in the light of the figures given in answer to written question 9169, tabled on 19th January 2016, which showed significant increases in the waiting lists across all categories?
Answer
The current waiting list for social rental homes has not significantly changed in the last 2 years as indicated by the following housing gateway data, which demonstrates that both the overall waiting list and net waiting list (bands 1,2,3 & 6 - those in most urgent need) have remained steady at around 1,100 and 650 households respectfully.

The written answer provided to question raised by Deputy Higgins (1240/5/(9169)[1] concerned the total number of new applicants received by the housing gateway over given periods, which does not equate or is comparable to, the total number of applicants on the current waiting list requiring accommodation. Over a given period applicants will be added to or removed from the gateway list as they are either housed or no longer require accommodation.
As previously answered in my written response to question 1240/5(9129)[2], the primary means of supporting affordability is to deliver an adequate supply of new, good standard housing for our population, while also getting the most out of our existing housing, including reviewing options to get empty homes back into use.
Over the life of the Island Plan, an additional 1,000 units of affordable were planned to be constructed. An analysis is underway to provide details on delivery to date and expected delivery over the life of the Plan, across all tenures, including for rent and affordable purchase, with this to be published in early 2016.
