ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON TUESDAY 12th MAY 2020

Question

Will the Minister advise –

  1. how many permits have been given to construction sites since their introduction in response to the Coronavirus crisis;
  2. how many permit requests have been approved and how many have been denied; and
  3. how many site visits, if any, have been carried out in order to check that sites where work is clearly happening have been issued with a permit?

Answer

  1. As of 5 May 2020, a total of 141 construction site permits had been issued – 31 under the voluntary scheme prior to the adoption of the Covid-19 (Construction Work) (Jersey) Regulations 2020 and 110 under the Covid-19 (Construction Work) (Jersey) Order 2020 which was made under the Regulations.
  2. No applications for permits  have  been refused. The  application assessors are  working with the applicants in each case to assist them to understand and put in place appropriate measures for their particular site.
  3. Building Control Inspectors will be visiting and monitoring behaviours on construction sites. Between 1 April and 5 May, the Health and Safety Inspectorate (HSI) made 32 site visits in connection with its role and responsibilities. During these visits, HSI noted  5 sites that were  operating without an appropriate permit and reported these to the Covid Construction Team.
