WQ.246/2020

WRITTEN QUESTION TO THE MINISTER FOR TREASURY AND RESOURCES BY DEPUTY M. TADIER OF ST. BRELADE

ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON TUESDAY 30th JUNE 2020

Question

Will the Minister state what Government grant, if any, was given to fund the statue of George de Carteret in St. Peter ; and, if such a grant was given, will the Minister advise who requested it, who approved it and what due diligence, if any, was undertaken before the grant was agreed?

Answer

An answer was tabled at the sitting of 30th June saying that no Government grant was given to fund the statue of George de Carteret in St. Peter .

Further work by officers has revealed that this answer was incorrect, for which the Minister apologises. A contribution of £15,000 was made in 2014 by the (then) Treasury and Resources Department. This contribution was made following a request from the (then) Connétable of St. Peter to the (then) Minister for Treasury and Resources. The contribution was in support of the 350th anniversary of the founding of New Jersey. No specific due diligence appears to have been undertaken.

Two further payments are relevant to this question –

A payment of £1,114.50 was made by the Planning and Building Services Department. This is believed to be the release of a "Percentage for Art" contribution from a developer (and therefore not a payment from Government expenditure).

A payment of £20,000 was made by Jersey Airport, which is also believed to be as a "Percentage for Art" contribution.
