WRITTEN QUESTION TO THE MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

BY THE CONNÉTABLE OF ST. JOHN

QUESTION SUBMITTED ON MONDAY 10th MAY 2021 ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON MONDAY 17th MAY 2021

Question

Will the Minister advise –

  1. why sea water testing was not carried out at Bonne Nuit Bay in 2020, despite sewage treatment works being located in the bay;
  2. whether or not the sea water at Bonne Nuit will be tested at least 20 times throughout the bathing season this year (May to September), in line with the testing regime for other bays around the Island;
  3. whether Bonne Nuit will be added to the list of bays that will be routinely tested in future years; and
  4. what plans (if any) there are to conduct testing of Bonne Nuit on a year-round basis in future, given the recent increase in all-year-round sea-swimming?

Answer

  1. The Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/EC lays down provisions for the monitoring and classification of bathing water quality. This Directive applies to any element of surface water where the competent authority expects a large number of people to bathe. In this case, Bonne Nuit currently does not have a large number of bathers in relation to other more popular island beaches, as such monitoring has been ceased. If this changes in the future, this will be reviewed.
  2. Please see above.
  3. No, for the reasons above.
  4. None, for reasons above.
