WQ.148/2022
WRITTEN QUESTION TO THE MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS BY SENATOR T.A. VALLOIS
QUESTION SUBMITTED ON TUESDAY 19th APRIL 2022 ANSWER TO BE TABLED ON TUESDAY 26th APRIL 2022
Question
“For each of the last five years, will the Minister advise –
- how many domestic abuse cases have been reported to the States of Jersey Police;
- in how many civil cases domestic abuse has been cited; and
- in how many criminal cases there has been a reference to domestic abuse as a major factor?”
Answer
- Incidents:
Domestic Abuse related incidents refer to incidents where police have attended but no crime has been committed, for example a verbal argument only.
- Information regarding civil cases would not be held by the Police, or any other service under this Minister’s responsibility. Enquiries with the Judicial Greffe have confirmed that the Courts do not maintain or hold information showing in how many civil cases domestic abuse has been cited.
Domestic Abuse related crime accounts for approx. 15% of all crime in Jersey. This is similar to the levels reported in the UK. Unfortunately, however, large numbers of victims for a variety of complex reasons do not support an investigation or prosecution. This currently amounts to 50% of victims.
