10 November 2020 Dear Chairman

Sale of Government - Owned Vehicle Registration Number Plates

In your letter of 20 October 2020 you asked for information regarding the selling by auction of the J4 vehicle registration plate. Below is our response to your four questions.

1.The Government receives the full bid price and pays no commission to the auctioneer.

  1. See 1 above.
  2. Yes, annual auctions have been held since 1998. Previous auction results are published on https://opendata.gov.je/dataset/vehicleregistration-marks-public-auction-hammer-prices. Legislation allows for the Inspector of Motor Traffic to issue selected mark rights either by private sale, tenders or by auction. The Inspector considers a public auction to be the most effective and transparent method. However, the Inspector of Motor Traffic also makes selected four digit registration marks available throughout the year to purchase online at gov.je or at DVS.
  3. Yes, there is a pool of registration marks (including JSY and 4 digits etc.) which would be available at future auctions or made available to purchase direct from DVS.

If there is any other information you require, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely

Deputy Kevin Lewis Minister for Infrastructure
