States Greffe

Deputy John Young Minister for the Environment BY EMAIL

23rd December 2021 Dear Minister,

Fishing Vessel Licensing – Questions

Thank you for your recent attendance at the public quarterly hearing held on 7th December 2021 and the responses to questions provided by yourself and officers in relation to the fishing vessel licensing regime. We would be grateful for your response to the following questions:

  1. Local fishermen have quoted exorbitant fees of £70k+ to fish in Jersey's waters and a lack of parity for French/EU fishing vessels in having to bear the same costs. Please could  you  clarify  what  these  fees  relate  to  and  whether  they  apply  to  French/EU vessels? Are these licence fees tradeable?
  2. Please could you advise on the current status of the reclassification of Jersey's waters?

The Panel would appreciate receipt of a written response by Monday 10th January 2022. Please note it is the intention to publish the written response on the States Assembly website.

Yours sincerely,

Connétable M. K. Jackson

Chairman, Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel
