Dear Matt,
Ports of Jersey - Progress on Carbon Tax or Charge Relating to Private Aircraft Operations
The Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel (the Panel') met recently and discussed the Government of Jersey's Proposed Budget (Government Plan) 2025-2028 (the Budget'). Within this, the Panel notes the Government's ongoing commitment to investigating an appropriate carbon tax or charge related to the operation of private aircraft, as outlined in both the Budget and the preceding Government Plan 2024-2027.
The Budget mentions that the Government continues to engage with Ports of Jersey to consider the options available for implementing such a tax or charge. The Panel is keen to understand the specific work being undertaken by Ports of Jersey in this regard, and so would appreciate an update on any progress made in managing the operation of private aircraft, including any work that has been done to assess the feasibility of implementing a higher landing charge to promote sustainability.
We would be grateful if you could provide a response at your earliest convenience, or alternatively, if a meeting could be arranged to discuss these matters in person.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we look forward to your response. Yours sincerely,
Deputy Hilary Jeune
Chair, Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Panel
