Dear Chair,
Re: Concerns regarding delays in cataracts operations for private patients
Thank you for your letter dated 26 September 2024. I have endeavoured to respond to your queries below.
- What is the current status of cataract operations for public patients?
There are two options for public patients receiving cataract operations. The first is provided by HCS at JGH with our ophthalmology surgeons. The second is through a purchased outsourcing company at Southampton following clinical triage and acceptance. Currently the two on island microscopes are broken and are waiting repair, in the meantime there has been a pause on cataract operations on Island, but we continue to send patients off island.
- Is the cataract machine out of order and if so, what is being done to repair it?
The machine is out of order currently, the manufactures are arriving on Island this week to repair it. Once repaired, the service will be able to commence immediately
- What is the current status of cataract operations for private patients?
Private patients who are waiting for surgery are the responsibility of the treating private surgeon. Private Patients need to be managed by the treating private surgeon to make alternative arrangements if required.
I trust the above is of assistance. Yours sincerely,
Deputy Tom Binet
