Deputy Doublet Chair, HSS Panel BY EMAIL

20 February 2024

Dear Chair,

Re: Legislative timeframe for Assisted Dying

I would like to provide the Panel with an updated timeframe for the Assisted Dying legislative proposals.

As you will be aware, my predecessor proposed an extended lodging period of 12 weeks to provide fellow States Members additional time to consider the proposals.

Recognising the extensive consultation and engagement already carried out, and that a number of States Members are already calling for this legislation to be brought forward as soon as possible, I have made the decision to retain an extended lodging period, and for this to be for a period of 9 weeks (as opposed to the minimum 6 week period).

I feel that this strikes the appropriate balance between offering States Members sufficient time to consider the proposals without creating any further delays to progress this piece of work. As such, the amended timeframe is as follows:

Early March: Council of Ministers to confirm Report and Proposition

By 22 March: Lodge Report and Proposition

March – May: Extended lodging period (9 weeks)

21 May: States Assembly debate

I trust the above is of assistance to the Panel. Yours sincerely,

Deputy Tom Binet
