5. Education, Sport and Culture: quarterly hearing

The Panel received the Minister for Education, Sport and Culture and his Chief Officer for a quarterly hearing on the work of the department and his priorities.

The Panel noted the timetable for the draft Sports Strategy, which was expected in October, and that a ministerial group had been formed to consider  the  way  forward  with  regard  to  the  future  of  secondary education following the Green Paper of 2011. The group intended to visit a variety of schools models in the UK before commissioning an independent external review to commence in Q2 2014.

The Panel was informed that the review of core subjects was taking

longer  than  expected  due  to  complexities  that  had  not  been anticipated initially. A report on Maths was expected in September to be followed by a review of English commencing in January 2014.
