Social Affairs Sub-Panel (Overdale Review) Notes – Meeting with Miss. D. Simon and Mrs. J. Dingle

Present Deputy A.E. Pryke, Chairman
Deputy R.G. Le Hérissier, Vice-Chairman Deputy S.C. Ferguson
Deputy D.W. Mezbourian
Miss. D. Simon Mrs. J. Dingle
In attendance Mr. W. Millow , Scrutiny Officer
- Miss. Simon and Mrs. Dingle recounted the experiences of their mother to the Sub-Panel:
- Prior to November 2003, their mother had been at home where she had received care from Family Nursing and Home Care.
- In November 2003, she was given a new hip and subsequently received care in Samarès Ward . Miss. Simon and Mrs. Dingle had found conditions in this ward to be acceptable and were particularly happy with the physiotherapy their mother had received.
- It eventually became apparent that Mrs. Simon required nursing care. Miss. Simon and Mrs. Dingle advised the Department of Health and Social Services that they would wish to visit any premises to which their mother might move prior to the transfer: they would have been happy to see their mother move to either The Limes or Sandybrook.
- Mrs. Simon moved to Leoville Ward . Miss. Simon and Mrs. Dingle advised the Sub- Panel that they had not been given advance notice of this transfer and were not provided with an explanation. Conditions in this Ward were "Dickensian" and there was a lack of privacy for patients. In addition, items of Mrs. Simon's clothing were lost during her time there.
- After a few days, Miss. Simon and Mrs. Dingle arranged for their mother to move to Bon Air Nursing Home. The care received by their mother in this care home was not ideal. Their mother ultimately passed away at Bon Air Nursing Home.
- Miss. Simon and Mrs. Dingle indicated they had no objection to the location of Overdale Hospital as a site for nursing wards. However, they felt that it should not be necessary for people to receive care in conditions such as those present in Leoville Ward .
