Dear Sirs,
I am writing to put forward my opinion on the fulfilment industry laws you are passing.
I believe this is really ill advised and certainly not in keeping with the islands history, the finance industry is where it is at the moment because of the existing loop holes in the law, are we about to send all of the industry back to appear to be doing the right thing too? If any company like Tesco is wanting to use the island as a post box let them, I fail to see the arm in so doing. After all which supermarket buys most of our jersey potatoes produce? The company is still employing local resident (5 years resident) who for most part would find it difficult to find alternative employment. Since the business s end of Christmas rush, most of the staff who are employed on a need basis have repeatedly required letters to housing, parish welfare, to help them with the fall of their wages. If you shut this industry not only the list of state dependant will increase, but as well the amount of taxable staff will decrease too, where are you going to find the extra money?
It seems to me you the government would rather spend millions on subsidising the tourism industry and basically would rather flog a dead horse than jump on a healthy one.
I believe the UK government and the rest of Europe are big and wise enough to impose their view if they really wanted to, why trying to concede something that we are not required to do? Such decision will have an impact on the island 800 staff out of jobs will be difficult to assume on the island s economy. The states themselves are benefiting from such industry our postal system finds most of its revenue because of it, with out it the Jersey Post will have to rely more heavily on the states hand out. So you will have to dig in our pockets to sustain the 800 redundant, then the other from the post office, then the post office itself.
Of course I have a personal interest in this matter since I am employed by the industry, but make no mistake that I know what other kind of employee surrounds me, I know most of them will not find other employment, and will live at the dependence of the states.
