Submission from Bertram Hi there
With the review on nets for fishing and trot line laws I think we should follow Guernsey, and register every net, through a central register, so nets are not placed in areas where they might foul propellers, and trot lines, which have hooks hanging off them, are not placed in areas where they might catch wildlife or humans walking at low tide.
I have witnessed by catch of birds, on both nets and trots in Jersey waters, and Seals are also caught in nets placed in Jersey waters. We need a 'no take zone' off Jerseys north coast up to one km from the coast to protect the marine birdlife nesting along the coast throughout the year including some seabirds nesting now in early winter.
Birds are caught in nets placed to catch bait off the north coast which should be legislated against as soon as possible. I am conducting a breeding seabird survey this summer and next year for the group GISOM the International specialists on seabird biology over here in tandem with other Channel Island naturalists. We hope to work together to set up a Channel Islands biodiversity register as exists in Guernsey and the other Channel Islands throughout he Societies in Guernsey, Sark, Alderney and Jersey.
Kind regards
