Dear Panel

Further to your recent notice in the JEP, my comments are as follows:

  • I support traffic calming measures in the Island.
  • I am pleased with the introduction of 20mph restrictions in the school zones that were introduced.
  • I do not think reducing speeds on roads improves safety, it is lack of concentration and road awareness that causes the incidents/accidents.
  • I do think we need more States policing of speed, not just relying on honorary officers to do occasional checks. It should be once a week and is the best deterrent.
  • I live on a Green Lane and I do not think we should increase Green Lane speeds as the cost of changing the signage is significant and I am yet to see a speed check conducted in a green lane so if it is not policed do not spend unnecessarily. Those who breach the speed limit in Green Lanes will continue to do so no matter what the "official" speed is. I have cars frequently passing my house doing what appears to be 30mph+ in the Green Lane.
  • Yes I think we should consider introducing a penalty points system with loss of licence for major offenders and/or fixed penalties option for speeding offences.
  • States of Jersey should consider using the income raised from fines in investing in further speed radars, police speed checks and awareness advertising.

Thank you for considering my opinion above.
