Dear Panel
I consider it is absolutely essential that the speed limit in the Green Lanes remains at 15 mph. The arguments have been rehearsed many times, and it would appear that the only reason to increase the limit to 20 mph is to simplify' island speed limits.
The amount of traffic has increased greatly since the Green Lanes were first introduced by Max Pollard in St Peter. In such a small island places to walk safely are at a premium and must be safe guarded at all costs. It was heralded as a brilliant idea, and remains a feather in the cap' of Jersey for walkers, cyclists, people with small children, horse riders, etc. whether they are locals or visitors.
There is also the never mentioned fact that wildlife gets a better chance of survival if vehicles are traveling more slowly – squirrels, hedgehogs, other small mammals, birds. Do they have no rights at all?
As it is, the limit is exceeded more often than not, to the tune of at least 5 and often 10 mph. Increase the legal limit to 20, and cars will travel at 25 or 30. It is a fact of life, and impossible to police on a daily basis.
What about the practicalities? Are the parishes going to have to pay for changes in signs, remarking the roads, and so on? What an extraordinary waste of money in these straitened times.
If simplification is what is required, then I propose an island-wide 30 mph limit, no 20 mph zones, and 15 in the Green Lanes (which should be extended). Then life might be quite peaceful!
Please consider these points when deliberating. Mrs Christine Gill
