Dear Sirs

My preference is as follows:

  • A) Legislate on the basis that the majority of drivers are law abiding intelligent drivers
  • B) Resist establishing low speed limits which are almost impossible to keep
  • C) Toughen up on drivers who will flout the law whatever the speed limit
  • D) Fix limits as follows
  • Overall max limit of 40mph
  • Green lanes to 25mph and state "priority to pedestrians, cyclists and riders"
  • Outside schools and other agreed areas 25mph
  • Within Town and other equivalent villages 30mph
  • (If it is really necessary to place reductions on other roads as in St Clements and St Martins (which I do not accept) place limit at 35mph)

Comments

A)

  • If we legislate for the worst driver, then we will eventually be back to red flags in front of cars!

B)

  • 20mph through St Peter's village is artificially low. Make such places 30mph or if that is not acceptable, make the slow speed 25mph. I think that more people would accept 25mph as workable and keep to it
  • 30mph through much of St Clements is certainly hardly ever achieved even by buses and certainly not by taxis and white vans. It is very frustrating to drive at a speed which is too low for the circumstances
  • Driving north from Robin Hood, the 30mph is kept for too long and bizarrely changes to 40mph before the Cook gallery when the speed should be lower past driveways etc
  • 30mph from Gorey to St Martins again is too low for the circumstances
  • It is crazy that when driving at 30mph in St Clements and St Martins when one is prevented from using ones discretion under 40mph, all the side roads are permitted at 40mph where one is presumably required to use ones discretion.

C)

  • No amount of speed limits will stop idiots failing to use any common sense and speeding at 50 plus in the most unsuitable places (I was overtaken on the outside bend going up Grouville hill from the direction of Rue des Pres)
  • If a person creeps over the speed limit to 35mph in a place where it really is quite safe, I would tolerate that and preserve action against the reckless drivers

D)

  • These limits would be widely acceptable to the sensible driver
  • Idiots and people who just do not care will always drive at unsuitable speeds whatever limits are established
  • Creeping down a green lane at 15mph with no one in sight is rather silly.
