Review of Speed Limit Policy
I have the following comments on two of the proposals – Increase in green lanes from 15 mph to 20 mph
Like a number of other people, residents and visitors alike, I walk regularly as a leisure recreation. The green lanes are an invaluable resource in a traffic-ridden Island, and I think that it would be a misguided and retrograde step to increase the speed limit. I suspect that many motorists simply do not appreciate what it feels like for a pedestrian in a narrow country land to be passed by a vehicle travelling at anything approaching speed. I cannot think that the saving in time which the motorist would gain by an extra 5 mph for the length of a green lane justifies the imposition on the pedestrian.
Penalty points system
Definitely yes. Too many motorists seem completely untroubled by the thought of any financial penalty which may follow such infractions of the law as driving through a red light, or across a pedestrian crossing which a pedestrian is about to cross, or while using a mobile phone.
