The Green Lane network has been, and continues to be, a valuable marketing tool for the island. I have a bed and breakfast business in St Lawrence and I and my guests benefit greatly from close proximity to this network.

It would appear that the proposed increase in speed limit is mainly to enable drivers to keep to it. My concern is by raising the limit to 20mph, would it be likely that motorists with a propensity for speeding, then drive at 25 – 30 mph thus creating more of a problem than that which we now have. Would these lanes be policed more successfully than they are now, should this change be implemented?

I also question any law change that might compromise safety of a pedestrian over a driver's inability or unwillingness to control his or her speed. Undoubtedly there are a few lanes that lend themselves to an increase in speed limit, but there are many which common sense would dictate should remain at the existing limit and I urge the Environment Scrutiny Panel to think very carefully before supporting any proposed changes. There are myriad issues on this island that require addressing before this one.

With regards
