Care of Children in Jersey Review Panel Written Submission

I am responding to your e-mail and letter signed by Deputy Mezec, in respect of the above.
The bulk of the recommendations must be followed through but the recommendation relating to the destruction of Haut de la Garenne is misplaced. The point about it being a constant reminder of those that have been abused might be relevant if it was in the centre of St. Helier but it is not and therefore whether the building exists or not is to my mind irrelevant. In addition the cost of destroying this asset and rebuilding something else in its place or even returning the site to nature is unjustifiable.
Furthermore, we have some customers that were abused there and the small number that have expressed their views do not care one way or the other whether it is demolished. The point has been made that it was not the bricks and mortar that caused the suffering but the people charged with looking after the children and the lack of proper supervision by the authorities.
