Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel Budget 2019 Review – Submissions

Louise Haskins

Hello, I would like to comment on the proposed relief in the forthcoming Budget, withdrawing the 20% income tax on Occupational pensions for Ex Pats. While I am delighted that this unjust tax is being stopped, Having to wait till 2020, will cause me more unnecessary suffering.

Prior to retiring in 2015 with just the Social Security Old age pension and an occupational Pension of £6000, I Was told by the Tax office that I would only be paying a few hundred pounds in Jersey tax. My husband (who is too young for a pension), and I calculated that we could just afford to move to Crete to live.. The first year was manageable, but when the relief was stopped in 2016, I then had to pay £1000 a year in Jersey tax. This has crippled us, and had a severe effect on our lifestyle (Can no longer afford petrol for our car), and we have been considering returning to Jersey. The removal of this tax is wonderful. but to have to wait another year for the benefit is totally unfair. I have already spent 2 years of what should have been a happy retirement worried sick about money, please help.

Kind Regards, Louise Haskins

One thing I forgot to comment on, and I may be mistaken in this, is that had my husband and I remained in Jersey, and just gone travelling, with a combined income of just over £16000, (combined income from my pensions, as my husband has no income), we would not earn enough to pay any Jersey tax?
