Population and Migration Policy Review
Thank you for your letter dated 20th June 2019 regarding your Population and Migration Policy Review.
I am aware that the Migration Policy Development Board is currently gathering evidence and researching potential options for initial policy proposals.
From my department the Director Young People, Further Education, Higher Education and Skills has already presented to the Board.
Some of the key issues for my policy area with regard to Jersey's migration policy and population include the skilled local workforce, productivity, identifying the skills and labour gaps, plus educating and training the resident workforce to the skill levels required by local industries. These and other issues are already being considered as part of our Post-16 Strategy which we are reviewing following the recent completion of 6 weeks consultation.
The statutory provision of education to all school age children is relevant as is access to Higher Education Funding and opportunities for lifelong learning on island.
Population and Migration both have a significant impact on parts of my policy and likewise there are many areas of my policy which can contribute to the policy options of migration and population.
I'm due to attend a public scrutiny hearing with you on this matter and look forward to discussing this further with you and the Panel at the hearing.
