Dear Deputy Johnson ,
lnclusion of Jersev in the UK-Trade and Economic Cooperation Aqreement (TECA)
Thank you for your letter dated 20 January addressed to Chris Ambler. I am responding as have had responsibility for monitoring Brexit developments over the last few years. I
Our understanding is that the TECA is limited to governing the relationship between Jersey and the European Union in relation to: a) trade in goods, including customs procedures and the implementation and recognition of regulatory standards in relation to agricultural and manufactured goods; and b) the access to Jersey's territorialwaters.
Our main interest is to ensure the continuation of our existing importation arrangements for electricity from Europe and as such the agreement appears to be benign for Jersey's electricity interests. We are however not complacent and keep in touch with our supplier, EDF, on a regular basis, and received confirmation again in recent days that they continued to see no reason why Brexit would have any influence on their ability to supply power to Jersey.
However, there is always the potential for political risk to surface from time to time but contractually our status to the end of 2027 remains unchanged.
lf you have any follow-on questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
