Tuesday, January 5, 2021 Review of the Future Hospital Preferred Access Route to Overdale
- Will you be affected by the proposed access route to Overdale? If so, how?
Old St Johns Road is a steep narrow one-way road that serves as an extremely popular, pleasant
and relatively safe (despite the lack of pavements) pedestrian route into town for residents from a large catchment area as far North as La Grande Route du Mont à l'Abbé and West from the apex of Tower road. The Overdale development will have serious spill over repercussions that will result in an increase to the traffic flow and seriously jeopardize this important pedestrian artery.
- How do you think the access route will affect the homes, leisure facilities and surrounding areas and the overall impact on the landscape?
The Westmount acts as an important green backdrop to the west of St Helier and enhances the visual aesthetics of Peoples Park any diminution of the Westmount backdrop will negatively affect the visual sense of space the park currently affords. The new route will decimate the whole tranquil and historic nature of the area.
- Do you feel the plans offer easy access using bus, bicycle or walking and take into account appropriate sustainable methods of transport?
No. You only need the intuition of local knowledge to understand the intricacies of why access is so difficult. Every route is circuitous to overcome the elevation. Access to each route is also difficult due to the one-way system.
- Do you feel the public were given adequate time to properly consider all the information provided by the States to engage properly in consultation?
No and I do not think States members were either. The problem is that there is no cost-effective solution. The day Overdale was selected the engineers and consultants rubbed their hands with glee at the thought of the fees and costs that would be generated.
- Do you feel that any views of the public (whether minority or majority views) were adequately addressed by the Government of Jersey?
No, the messenger always gets shot.
- Was your voice heard?
May have been heard but not listened to.
NOW that Overdale has been selected the wholesale environmental destruction of Westmount and the associated financially ruinous costs are seeing the light of day. It is vital that scrutiny be undertaken to compare the full and total costs for Overdale with Warwick Farm and St Saviours Hospital. Warwick Farm would not require anywhere near the amount of highway improvements that are currently proposed for Overdale. Until a full analysis of the alternate site costs are made no one can be sure that Overdale is the optimum financially cost-effective site for OUR NEW HOSPITAL .
