I use cash, card and cheques and definitely would not like to see cash phased out. It wouldn't be right, everyone needs that option .
I help Parkinson's Jersey and change the collecting tins in the West (40 Tins every 3 to 4 months). We do have some tins that don't hold a lot but every penny
counts. Parkinson's Jersey does not receive any help from the Government. However, some tins are changed every 6 to 8 weeks because there are some very generous
people out there who will put cash in the tins and we are extremely grateful to
them. We can average £250 to £300 pounds from tins on each changeover which is a great deal to a Charity over the year.
Another quandary if cash is taken away - I have been out twice and the computers have gone down and the establishments can't accept a card and will accept cash only.
Elderly people have grown up with cash and that is what they are used to, don't take that away from them. Cards can throw up awful problems for them if they forget the pin number, the rheumatism in their fingers hinders the pressing out in a cash machine or other machines.
At nearly 70 I suppose I have to put myself in the elderly category even though I certainly don't feel the age! I have grown up with cash and adding figures in my head. No calculator when I was at school. I passed my Mental Arithmetic exam with high praise from my teacher and I will always remember her words when we finished the Course, "this is what you will use in your everyday life" . She was right and I still add figures up in my head. Can the young people do that now with all the gadgets they use at
school? Their minds and brains are going to get lazier and lazier and in time they won't
be able to talk as a machine will do that for them as well.
I am 100% for keeping cash. It is the currency for all countries. I would be horrified not to be able to handle the Jersey notes anymore and show our beautiful Jersey
cow's head on the £1 note to foreigners when I go away on holiday. It is really a good talking point.
I admire all the businesses who have a little notice saying "we prefer cash", I thoroughly agree with them.
I also help to count the money at the Royal British Legion every year, I have been doing this since I retired 10 years ago and thoroughly enjoy it. Yes card machines are used as well now but this is another hindrance to the elderly people who have been helping for many. many more years than me. They are manning a stand and don't understand the machine, it is worrying for them and I know a few who don't help any more because of this, that doesn't seem fair either.
I love to count the cash and if cash is phased out I will be out of a job there as well.
Thank you for reading this and I will carry on using cash and have cash in my bag wherever I go on the island and also when I go away.
Thanks again Pam Laurens
