Gender Pay Gap Review Panel Ministerial Response
Firstly, I would like to thank you for your time yesterday in discussing with the Panel your response to its report on the gender pay gap in Jersey. My fellow Panel members and I thought it was extremely useful to talk through some of the issues related to the gender pay gap. I think there was a general consensus amongst all of us that there are issues in Jersey and it will take time for the situation to improve, so action needs to be taken. We were pleased to see that work has already begun.
During the meeting, we discussed one particular key finding (KF5) which was about the glass ceiling in education. The response says that the finding is factually incorrect and we discussed this, agreeing that perhaps this was unfortunate phrasing because the key finding was in fact accurate based on the information and statistics provided by the Education Department. The agreement was that the Ministerial Response would be re-issued to reflect this discussion.
There is a news article in the Bailiwick Express which has picked up on this finding and the comments, specifically focussing on the wording "factually incorrect". I'm sure you would agree this reflects negatively on the reputation of the Panel's report, and the Ministerial Response itself, and depicts a conflict between Ministers and the Panel where there is not one. Therefore, I would respectfully ask that the Ministerial Response is re-issued as a matter of urgency.
