Subject: Mobile Phone Masts
**************************************************************************************
Deputy A. Breckon, Scrutiny Panel
Dear Alan,
I am concerned about the high level of superstitious nonsense being circulated about the safety of mobile phone masts. It is imperative for the credibilty of the States in general, and Scrutiny in particular, that your panel weighs the evidence placed before it by its quality, and not its quantity.
Firstly, if mobile phone signals were shown to be harmful, contrary to all reliable existing evidence, the main source of exposure is handsets. Therefore these would need to be banned.
Secondly, the more masts that are dispersed around the island, the lower the strength of signal that is needed from each one to cover the area.
Thirdly, care needs to be taken with checking calculations. Some of the letters in the JEP plainly muddle mW and MW; an error of 12 orders of magnitude.
There were good arguments against the introduction of an artificial market in mobile phones, but scare-mongering amongst the scientifically ignorant is no basis for public policy and must be vigorously resisted.
You may quote this letter. Yours sincerely
