16th June 2008 Jersey Island Debate

To Whom it may Concern

Many thanks to the Jersey Island Breeders and the World Jersey Bureau for their hospitality on our recent visit to your Island for the World Jersey Conference. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Jersey Cow in their home land.

Our family have had Pedigree Jerseys for almost 100 years in New Zealand. We did notice that the Jerseys on Jersey Island are starting to fall behind other countries for both type and production. Poor udder support and bad teat placement were noticeable and a lack of dairyness.

We hope Jersey Island decision makers allow Breeders to use selected overseas bull semen to improve their genetic base. The small genetic base left on the Island is really starting to show.

Jersey still has some lovely cows but they need to have access to the very best bulls in the world enabling farmers on Jersey to grow again, their export business and to be able to increase their production.

Overseas Bull Selection needs to happen urgently for a sustainable future for the Jersey Cows on Jersey Island to grow and prosper.

We hope you make the right choice and reap the rewards.
