Good afternoon, Deputy

Having sent in a submission regarding a detail about Fort Regent, I learn it is to be listed as a part of the overall scrutiny examination of the Fort.

Accordingly I should like to make a more broad submission, while still holding to the original opinion.

I do agree the Fort should be a listed site of importance to the island's history. When it was first opened as a set of leisure spaces my family used the facilities extensively. As the place has become reduced to a scruffy and depressing site, we have used it less and less. However we do appreciate that it offers a great deal to the public in sporting and other cultural events, and we believe - as it, seems, does the Minister - that these should continue. More investment in it would improve the appearance and ambience; and if the States cannot afford it then the States should relinquish it into private ownership or private-public agreements. Further years will only see further deterioration.

Private-public partnership ought to enable the staff to be left in place. They seem to be doing a good job. It is especially noticed how the events diary has increased its activities.

It might be worth some research to discover the following:

  1. why, in the time of recession, so much money is being spent by the public on the events at the Fort and
  2. why the Fort Events diary is doing so much better than other venues in terms of attracting quality items.

Nothing will work well at the Fort until and unless access is improved. Cable cars from Snow Hill worked well once, and it may be that - with health-and-safety considered and involved – it could work again.

Escalators from Pier Road should go from top to bottom.

The decayed swimming pool should be removed and no building there should reach the skyline as it did before.

The Glacis Field should remain what it was and is. Kind regards

Sue Lissenden, Mrs
