Ref' Fort Regent Dear Sir / Madam

It has been suggested to me that I send this into your panel for consideration having had conversations elsewhere. I have lived in Jersey for over 10 years and worked in broadcasting for 10 years before that. I have read the submissions on your website and note the references to the heritage option and accept that a sports facility is popular while housing or hotel might also be practical in these times.

However; if I may suggest that all these look to the past, or the current, status quo. I urge the panel to consider the future and in so doing the development of this site to something for the future. Something that a future generation can exploit for their needs rather than serve our own current preferences.

If the Fort was developed into a studio audience television production facility it could continue doing what it does; in terms of performing arts, but diversify; increase takings and with it, the potential for all sorts of other benefits.

Consider 'Who wants to be a Millionaire', it is a very well known example of a studio based TV programme. It needs a lot of floor space to fit in a crew, cameras, set and studio audience. When complete, they all pack up and go home. It is filmed in a finite period of time and broadcast months later over the weeks that make up the series. If it is successful they return for another series. A show like Allan Carrs new series is another example, but smaller. The expertise to make these programmes is often London-centric but crews frequently fly around the world for work. At the very least they will need to travel to 'the studio' wherever it may be. Floor space is rather expensive in central London so many are out of town; the north for example. Jersey is not that far away, (it could even be quicker to fly here rather than trek round the M25 or train up-to the North of England)...and infinitely more attractive to crews and studio audience alike; I suggest. The 'talent' may not agree but their attendance is often limited to actual filming which is often compressed in terms of the complete project timescale.

Development of a site into such a thing is along the lines of acoustics, flooring for cameras, power and lighting rigs. Specialist equipment would be brought in for each show in many cases. Tech' rooms such as a 'gallery' get re-used whatever the production...there are certain common themes to production.

If the Fort was converted to a studio audience television production facility it could provide the following benefits:

A potentially larger income per day of hire, compared to entertainment shows(?) -Companies take over these facilities with their own staff expertise and often their own 'hardware' Longer booking slots. -A television show could run to weeks rather than days Regular bookings. -A show may come back for series 2, series 3 etc etc Gaps between bookings would still be available for entertainment shows. -These slots could be regular slots and scheduled in advance; if managed properly The facility would be MORE attractive to entertainers and customers. -Artists may actually choose to record their performance for DVD sale. Customers may fly-in for a hotel deal with comedy. Having a venue for the 21st century will get Jersey on the entertainment circuit for all manner of shows along with short stay, (long weekend) , holiday makers, (the studio audience) with guaranteed entertainment. -It keeps air routes populated and hotels ticking over but does Not add to general road congestion or population increase.

I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the idea. Any new 'facility' would still be available to the local community to host all manner of stage events, local TV shows, even the opportunity for televised political debate...ooh I know replace the hustings with live debate.

Best Regards Jeremy.T
