Note:  After this amendment, the proposition would read as follows –

THE STATES are asked to decide whether they are of opinion

in accordance with Article 18(2)(e) of the States of Jersey Law 2005, to approve the statement of the Common Strategic Policy of the Council of Ministers as set out in the Appendix to this Proposition, except that on page 9 of the Appendix to the Proposed Common Strategic Policy 2018–22 ("5 Strategic priorities"), in the section headed "What we will achieve", at the end of the list of bullet-points, to insert a new bullet-point worded as follows: "Work with the UK Government and the Public of Jersey to find a way for Jersey to accept an appropriate number of refugees".

The Connétable of St. Helier makes a good case for Jersey to consider doing what it can to host a number of child refugees (or, rather, for willing Jersey families to do so). The question has to be asked: why only children?

If my amendment to the Connétable 's amendment is accepted, it will read –

"Work with the UK Government and the Public of Jersey to find a way for Jersey to accept an appropriate number of refugees".

Now, it may be that an appropriate' number of refugees to accept is zero. It may be that it is 3 families; 30 widows/widowers; 30 professionals. But it will ensure that any process for taking refugees is not based on ageism.

Financial and manpower implications

There are no additional financial or manpower implications for the States arising from this amendment.
